Disaster Prevention Know what you are throwing away
In our classes at Framework IT we spend time on Disaster Prevention. After all it makes disaster recovery a whole lot easier! There is a new wave of personal identity and information leaking (when you give it to someone, it really isn't theft, is it?) on old cell phones and PDAs. Take a minute to read the article by clicking on the title bar at the top of this post. Be careful, sometimes we are our own most significant enemy!

Are you in denial too?
One of my responsibilities at Framework IT is talking to potential clients about our Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Class. Yesterday I had a sad, but serious conversation with a medium sized (200 employees and 6 locations) services firm. "Yeh, we have a disaster plan, if the building is on fire, get the h___ out, I hope we don't have to write that down!"
This organization sells products that are Federally Regulated and are required to have current HAZMAT documentation regarding the products as well as a Disaster Recovery Plan.
Denial is is a key component that will contribute to business failure. You have worked too hard to be in denial.
See you all tomorrow!

She Makes Me Look Like a Nice Guy!
A Secret Service Report on "Insider Threats" just came out and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. This is an area we cover in the Framework IT BC/DR Class. Unusual behavior is a tip that you may have an issue. Keep an eye on remote access and login times from all users. If there are constant late night logins and bad explanations are reason for concern. Good Laws Bad Enforcement
As a parent I quickly realized the best rules for your kids are worthless if they are not enforced. In our DR/BC Class we review at length best practice policies and why they need to be enforced. The US Government has brought us SARBOX, GLB, HIPPA and the like. If you break the law you go to jail, But who is watch in US Government?

Is a flame thrower carry on luggage?
Right now Dell has its hands full! Discussions about low price = low quality and just a few other Public Relations Disasters. In our Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Class cover some of the "How to Prevent" issues. Public Relations is a HUGE issue. The wrong words from the wrong people can kill a company. "Yeh we have safety training, but no one ever goes" is a liability lawyers dream. Come to a Framework IT BC/DR Class and learn about Disaster Prevention (of all types)

Condom Computing = Disaster Prevention
Each time we teach our Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Class we share processes and policies that need to be followed to protect Corporate Data. Ever walked around an airport? Or a Starbucks? All of us have and we have all witnessed the growing number of people using their laptop computers connecting to the internet and their company with out being concerned or prepared for the results. Just as unsafe sex has serious consequences, so does unsafe computing. Follow this link to The New York Times Article which can help your firm PREVENT A DISASTER!

Beware! IRON Can Burn!
Ever wonder where those boxes of "archived documents" go? Maybe it is time you find out. There is no excuse for this...on any part. Users and the vendor should be ashamed of their lack of attention to protecting themselves.
This is a very preventable disaster!

Their lawyers want ALL Your E-Mail!
Do you have an E-Mail use and retention policy? One of the 1st things any opposing lawyer will ask for is all the documents (e-mail included) regarding the issue at hand. It is your responsibility and at your cost to deliver exactly that (at your cost)! Is this a disaster waiting to happen in your organization?

But it was just laying there!
This is so typical and shows the need for employee training. Too often we confuse a personal computer with a business computer. A business computer is a business tool, and must be respected as such. Get your e-policies up to date!
